Saturnalia the purge3/11/2023 The twist is that this group of apparent neighborly protectors against purgers turn out to be bitter and envious neighbors who have been filling up with hatred all year in envy of their extension being built, and being forced by Hawke to buy all that security. But at last another crowd breaks in, and shoot the crap out of the offending group. Once they break in, there is some creepy crawling, in a drugged out sort of way, and then attacks against the son, then against Hawke, who gets some good kills in, but is then is stabbed, and eventually does die of his wound, and then against Heady. The head of the gang is a typical evil-smiling smirking smug upper class creep who has become so popular in recent horror, he’s very good. They threaten to come in, and call in trucks and chains to pull down his security. At this point, the house is attacked by a group of very upper class purgers with masks borrowed from other recent home invasion movies such as the Uninvited. They find him, tie him up, then have doubts. He is shot, but then there is a long search for the African Amerian. ![]() In the meantime, the daughter’s boyfriend has stowed away in her closet, then comes down, angry at Hawke for not letting him see the daughter, to shoot him. But then the son has a moment of human compassion for a large African American guy who has run into that neighborhood seeking escape from a group of organized purgers who are out to kill him. They settle in, then, viewing the announcement on TV, and hearing the tornado-siren like siren announcing the beginning of the Purge, outside. They also have a robot building son and a daughter on the verge of getting laid in her bedroom. His home is imposing, made more so by a new extension, and by Lena Heady, as his wife. It also has a good premise, Ethan Hawke, always welcome in his second career in horror, plays a top salesman for a security company who sells Haunting-like window shields and other security devices, for the wealthy to protect themselves on that night. ![]() It has a lot of good news-world support by having lots of TVs around reporting on the Purge like it is a riot in this or that town, like we all do on CNN. The social ritualization of it all is kind of fun, with people carrying blue baptisias or setting them out on their lawns, to signify that they are participating in the ritual, and then everyone hunkering down for the night with wishes of Be Safe. It’s kind of a breathtaking premise, with many possibilities. Have one night of the year, the night of the Spring Equinox, when people are allowed to purge themselves of hate by killing whomever they are able to, and everybody else hides in their houses trying not to get killed. This movie proposes a revitalization of ancient topsy-turvy mardi gras festival routines, going back perhaps to Roman Saturnalia, when masters were slaves for a day, as the way to solve America’s crime problem.
